Black Hills UTV Rentals

A straightforward guide to booking a UTV rental in the famous Black Hills National Forest

The Black Hills National Forest packs more than 700 miles of designated OHV trails and nearly every mile is within an hour’s drive of icons like Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and historic Deadwood. That rare mix of scenery, trail infrastructure, and tourist attractions has turned the region into one of the busiest summer destinations for side‑by‑side rentals in the United States.

Because of this, about a dozen UTV adventure outfitters have popped up throughout the region – mostly clustered around Deadwood, Lead, and Hill City. Fleet sizes range from a handful of two‑seaters to dozens of six‑seat family rigs, and nearly all machines leave the lot street‑legal and trail‑permit‑ready so visitors can roll straight from town to the trails.

Before you book: What renters need to know

Trail permits and maps: To ride the Black Hills OHV trail system your vehicle needs a Forest‑Service trail permit. Rentals usually come with a commercial permit sticker already applied and a digital trail map on board or through a 3rd-party phone app.

Peak season and hours: Rental shops typically open by mid‑May (once the Black Hills trail system re‑opens) and run daily through mid‑October, or the season’s first heavy snow. July and August are the busiest months and reservations for holiday weekends and the Sturgis Rally should be made weeks in advance.

Deposits and liability: Expect to pay a non‑refundable reservation deposit when you book online. Unlike most UTV hubs in the country, only a few adventure outfitters place an actual security/damage deposit on your card (typically $1,000–$2,500). This deposit isn't necessarily a drawback – it may help cap your liability for accidents or damages to the UTV.

Driver age and license: A valid driver’s license is always mandatory. Minimum driver age is 18 at most locations, 21 at a few, and occasionally 25 for the primary renter. Minors may ride as passengers with a guardian’s signature; everyone under 18 must wear a helmet by law.

How to choose a rental outfitter? Pricing across the region is highly competitive so let proximity be the tiebreaker: book the shop closest to the trail network (or lodging) you want to explore, and look for extras that matter to you – GPS tablets, liability caps, or guided‑tour options, updated fleets, etc.

FAQ

What’s the best season for off-roading in the Black Hills?

Mid‑June through mid‑September delivers the driest trails, longest daylight, and every rental shop open seven days a week. Outfitters typically start operations around May 15 (when Forest Service trails reopen) and wind down in mid‑October as winter weather closes in.

Can I drive my rental UTV to Mount Rushmore?

Yes, but only to the memorial parking area. You may not drive your UTV rental inside the national park.

Do I need to buy a trail permit?

Almost never. Legit rentals already carry the Black Hills National Forest OHV sticker; the cost is baked into your fee. Ask at check‑out so you don’t purchase a duplicate.

What makes Side by Side Share different?

Side by Side Share is a peer-to-peer UTV rental marketplace – similar to AirBnB or Turo, but for for UTVs instead. While we hope to onboard more vehicle owners throughout South Dakota, renting through us gives you greater flexibility to explore the great outdoors at your own pace without the touristy headaches. Explore available listings here.
