Top Areas to Explore

Caribou-Targhee National Forest (Ashton/Island Park)

Nestled along the western slopes of the breathtaking Tetons, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers hundreds of miles of trails winding through dense pine forests, sprawling meadows, and rugged mountain terrain. The Ashton and Island Park areas serve as key staging points, with well-marked trailheads providing easy access to this vast network. Whether you’re up for a short, scenic ride or a multi-day expedition, trails like the Railroad Right-of-Way Trail offer gentle paths with jaw-dropping Teton views, while higher-elevation routes challenge seasoned riders.

Fall Creek & Palisades (Swan Valley)

Just southeast of Idaho Falls, near the shimmering Palisades Reservoir, this area boasts a collection of mellow UTV trails adored by locals. Accessible from rural hubs like Bone or Swan Valley, the network features smooth dirt roads and two-track paths that meander through high meadows and forested slopes of the Caribou Range. The Fall Creek Trail is a gem, guiding riders past whispering aspen groves and open fields with occasional peeks at the reservoir.

Owyhee Mountains

A short drive south of Nampa, the Owyhee Mountains deliver a high-desert riding experience that’s Boise’s nearest OHV escape. Miles of trails snake through sagebrush plains, sandy washes, and rocky canyons, catering to all skill levels. Try the Rabbit Creek Trail for a scenic, easy ride or the War Eagle Trail for more of a challenge. The stark beauty of this desert landscape – think endless vistas and the occasional hawk soaring overhead – makes every trip unforgettable.

Danskin Mountains OHV Area (35 Miles East of Boise)

Covering 60,000 acres, the Danskin Mountains OHV Area is a rider’s haven just 35 miles east of Boise. With over 150 miles of trails, this high-desert expanse offers something for everyone – easy loops for novices and rocky climbs for experts – all clearly marked for safety. Trailheads with camping options make it a great spot for a weekend escape.

Hemingway Butte (45 Miles Southwest of Boise)

Only 45 miles southwest of Boise, Hemingway Butte sprawls across 625 square miles of diverse terrain. From beginner-friendly paths through sagebrush flats to adrenaline-pumping trails with tight switchbacks and rocky stretches, this area has it all. Its proximity to Boise, paired with staging areas featuring ramps and restrooms, makes it a renter favorite.

Insights From Locals

"In summary, Idaho has a ton to offer for unique UTV experiences...

Within less than an hour away from Idaho Falls, I typically point renters towards Island Park, Caribou-targhee national forest, Bone/Swan valley, Driggs and Victor. And to the west, we have a lot of dessert and forest rides in the Challis-Salmon National Forest."

FAQ

Do I need a UTV registration?

All UTVs (even if its a rental) must display a current Idaho OHV sticker on public lands, available through the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. If you rent through one of our approved hosts on Side by Side Share, however, you won't need to worry about this. The same goes for most commercial adventure outfitters throughout the state.

Can I rent a UTV for multiple days if I want to camp or explore several areas?

Yes. Most local owners on Side by Side Share allow extended rentals, which is perfect if you plan to camp near the trails or explore different riding areas over several days. Some hosts even offer discounts for multi-day bookings.

What about towing? Do I need my own trailer?

It depends on the listing. Some owners include a trailer with the rental or offer delivery to nearby trailheads for a fee, while others require you to provide your own transportation. Check the listing details or ask the owner directly.

When is the best time of year to ride UTVs in Idaho?

Nothing beats a summer-time UTV trip in Idaho. Spring and fall do however offer milder temperatures, and winter riding is only sometimes depending on the conditions.
