Five Mile Pass UTV Trails
Beginner Loops: Stick to the hard-packed flats around the staging area, like the historic Pony Express Road, and the web of old Thorpe Hills mining roads. These wide, mostly level trails are perfect for beginners and families and serve as a good way to sight-see the desert without surprises. Expect light washboard, gentle grades, and plenty of pull-outs to snap photos.
Moderate to Technical Lines: Ready for a step-up? Rattlesnake is a short but popular wash with big ledges (bypass lines available) that’s perfect for honing rock-crawl skills. Beyond that, the climb to Sevenmile Pass mixes loose rock and mild off-camber stretches. Leave the really technical stuff – Constrictor, Sidewinder, and Eagle’s Nest – for the pros or custom rigs. These expert spurs feature big boulders and no easy outs.
Rules & Permits
Fivemile Pass is BLM land, so Utah OHV rules apply:
- Registration: Utah sticker for residents; non-residents must buy a Utah OHV permit online or in town.
- Machine Requirements: Spark-arrestor exhaust, working muffler; no width limit or flag rule.
- Safety Gear: Helmets aren't mandatory for riders but highly-suggested. Make sure your wear your seat belts as well. On ATVs, helmets are required for everyone under the age of 18.
- Stay on route: You cannot ride the rig in undesignated riding areas. In other words, stick to the trails and roads at all times. Fees: Riding and camping are still free (2025), but BLM has recently proposed a $10 day / $50 annual pass – so be sure to check for updates before you roll out.
Camping at Five Mile Pass
All camping is free, dispersed, and primitive – huge gravel flats near the highway plus countless pull-outs deeper in the hills. The recreation area has vault toilets, but no water, trash, or hookups, so pack it all in/out. Fires are allowed when restrictions aren’t in effect; use existing pits. Unlike state parks, which often have more rules and camping waitlists, Five Mile Pass gives UTV adventurers a bit more freedom. The payoff? Enjoy a ride straight from camp with endless space for big rigs and killer sunsets over the desert.
Commonly Asked Questions and Answers
Tips & Tricks For Those Planning a UTV Trip at Five Mile Pass
Can I get my UTV delivered?
Often, yes. Many vehicle owners who list with us at Side by Side Share offer delivery to the Fivemile staging lot or include a trailer – check each listing’s “Add-ons” section.
Can I keep my UTV rental with me overnight?
Yes, all rentals on Side by Side Share charge you by the night, just like AirBnB. Keep the rig for however long you want and take advantage of any multi-night discounts. Looking for just a day trip? That works too – just message the owner to discuss pick-up & drop-off times.
Is there an entry fee at Five Mile Pass? Not yet. Riding and camping are free as of 2025, but BLM may add a $10 vehicle fee – watch for posted updates.
What are the trail conditions at Five Mile Pass?
Mostly dry, hard dirt with loose rock. After a rainy day, the clay turns slick and rutted so give it a day to dry or stick to the wider roads.
When is the best time to visit?
While FiveMile pass is open year round, spring and fall are the best times to visit. Just note that in the summer, temperatures can hit the 90s °F (ride early/late), while winter is rideable but chilly with occasional snow dustings. Keep in the mind that during holiday weekends, it can fill up fast.
Do I need a map?
No, but it is suggested. Trails at Five Mile Pass aren’t well-signed. You can download an offline GPS layer (onX, Gaia) or grab the BLM PDF before losing cell service.
Is cell coverage reliable?
Spotty. Decent near Hwy 73, weak in the canyons. Bring a radio or let someone know your plan.
Where’s the nearest gas or groceries?
Eagle Mountain & Saratoga Springs (20–25 min) – which is where most of our UTV listings are nearby. Stock up before you head out because there’s nothing on-site.
Any tips for a quieter camp?
Stage farther west or south, away from the highway flats; bring shade and stake down tents – evening winds can surprise you.
